We are delighted to report on construction progress for the toilet and shower block at our Multi-Function Community Centre in Ambohidanerana (Soav).
Our deepest gratitude goes to Gosford North Rotary Club (GNRC), Sue O’Neill and Woy Woy Rotary Club for providing the funds to kick-start this vital project. Construction of the toilet and shower block was made possible with spare funds remaining from their generous donation to Thrive’s Community Health program.
Drs Shannon and Brendan Petersen who set up the Health Clinic recommended that toilets and showers were an essential adjunct to the Clinic.
Thrive’s Project Manager and senior Board member Graeme Buchan undertook a thorough planning process to ensure the correct location and design. A properly designed septic system takes effluent and puts it underground, allowing it to disperse safely. The location must be chosen carefully at a safe distance from wells and water courses.
Clean toilets = better health
Effective septic system are rare, if not unknown in this region. And yet they are vital for sustainable health practices because the existing systems, usually open trenches where waste is exposed, are a breeding ground for disease.

Following the planning and location stages, digging commenced for the footings and septic system. Next was pouring the slabs and brickwork, then rendering. The slab on the roof of the toilet block has been carefully engineered to support barrels containing1500 litres of water that will be used for showers and flushing toilets.
The aim is to bring water from our new well to these barrels, then purchase a solar powered pump to provide water , rather than the more cumbersome manual system that is in place in our toilet and shower block at the Children’s Home.
And this solar pump is our next vision that you may be able to help us realise through your generous donations. We estimate the cost to be $5000. Any amount you can donate will be gratefully welcomed.
