Thrive Community Centre

The issues

Many young people in Madagascar grow up with little or no education, and very limited employment prospects. No wonder they turn to alcohol, drugs and sex to escape. As a result, many children are born to young people who have little chance of supporting them. We want to inspire the youth of Madagascar to take a different path in life through a range of programs organized at our Community Centre.

Thrive Madagascar’s solution

Our vision is to draw opportunity and education closer to the youth of Soav. THRIVE COMMUNITY CENTRE is Thrive Madagascar’s most recent large-scale project in Ambohidanerana – situated about 7 kilometres from Soavinandriana. Our mission is to offer a fully equipped vocational training centre, health clinic, recreation area and business hub for all ages, with a focus on youth programs. We already have some programs in place, and these will be expanded once the centre is completed.

Currently, our Community Centre hosts weekly meetings for people with disabilities, involving them in educational and social activities, such as arts and crafts, cooking class, health teaching, and English Language teaching. People of Madagascar don’t have knowledge, nor show altruism to people with mental illnesses. Our Community Centre serves these people as a safe place to socialize and grow.

The Community Centre has also started a Youth Club to provide local youngsters with recreational activities like games, dance lessons, watching movies and English classes. In the village of Ambohidanerana, like in most Madagascar’s small towns, young people are suffering from a dreadful constant boredom. Our goal is to provide local youth with educational and fun activities as an alternative to hanging out in the streets. So far, approximately 40 young people aged 13 to 19 have joined our Youth Group.

Our health clinic is also operational, providing pregnant women from all around the county with the medical help they would otherwise not be able to afford.

Once completed, the THRIVE COMMUNITY CENTRE, will include:

  • A library / information centre
The only library available for kilometers around, THRIVE COMMUNITY CENTER’s library will serve as an information centre that will also provide a range of resources for the people of this poverty-stricken area.
  • An instruction room
We plan a full range of vocational training, including sewing. Sewing machines are ready to be set up in the main auditorium, that will serve as an instruction area for various vocational and living skills.
  • A main auditorium
The main auditorium will host indoor sports, training workshops, as well as arts and culture activities. We are currently run a youth group out of it with 40 plus members. We also rent the room out for events, to help Thrive be more self-sufficient.
